The requirements for importing a vehicle to the Dominican Republic are:

  • Only cars that are five (5) years old or less can be imported; in the case of trucks, they must be fifteen (15) years old or less from the date of manufacture.
  • You must pay a levy tax equivalent to 20% of the vehicle’s value, plus an additional 18% VAT.
  • The vehicle’s engine size limit cannot exceed 200,000 CC.
  • Clear title of ownership without liens.
  • If the vehicle is new, the name must appear on the front of the registered owner’s title.
  • If the car is for sale, both the seller and buyer must sign the back of the title in the appropriate spaces.
  • Commercial invoice in the language of the destination country.
  • Certificate of Origin (to apply tariff preferences under Trade Agreements).
  • Knowledge of the shipment.
  • Single Customs Declaration (DUA).

Which Vehicles Can Be Imported to the Dominican Republic?

  • Law 04-07 of January 5, 2007: prohibits the importation of cars over five (5) years old and heavy vehicles over fifteen (15) years old from the date of manufacture.
  • Decree 671 of August 27, 2002: prohibits the importation of salvage vehicles (i.e., cars that have been involved in accidents such as collisions, theft, flooding, among others).
